As part of the Council’s effort to expand its international activities, CII staff hosted a teleconference on Thursday, January 22 on the recent Satyam scandal and Indian corporate governance. Speakers included Salil Tripathi, an Asian business and politics writer based in London, and author of a recent Wall Street Journal editorial on the Satyam scandal; John Jarrett, Director of Research at GovernanceMetrics International, a global corporate governance ratings agency that has been warning about Satyam’s governance problems for some time; and Sharmila Gopinath, Research Director and expert on Indian corporate governance at the Asian Corporate Governance Association based in Hong Kong.
Panelists shared their observations, concerns, recommendations and general thoughts on the Satyam scandal and Indian corporate governance. A portion of their remarks were devoted to how they believe CII, its members, and all investors both in the US and abroad should react to Satyam, and prepare to respond effectively to future international corporate fraud.
